Bengeo Phase 2
Durkan Homes is one of London and the South-East’s leading independent development and construction companies, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2020.
Durkan Homes is in the process of submitting a planning application for 118 new homes on the land to the west of Wadesmill Road in Bengeo, Hertford to East Herts District Council. This application lays the foundation for the second phase of homebuilding in the area, with Durkan Homes’ adjacent site, The Stiles delivering the first phase of 52 homes in 2022.
Having a successful existing relationship with the marketing and sales side of the business, Camargue were appointed to lead the pre-application consultation process in the local community.
This involved running two in-person consultation events at Bengeo Cricket Club, engaging with local political stakeholders, advertising the consultation in the local media and extrapolating themes from the feedback received.
The key challenge of this project derived from the site’s location on a greenfield site in the residential area of Bengeo village. This meant that the project was faced with significant local resistance, culminating in an organised opposition group run by residents.
During our consultation delivery, we therefore had to monitor and navigate this opposition group in order to ensure balanced commentary of Durkan Homes’ plans in the local media.
The outcome of this was two well-attended consultation events visited by 311 members of the public and supported by 369 pieces of feedback.
This allowed us to review the proposals in line with the feedback received, ensuring that they meet the needs and aspirations of the East Herts District Plan.
