White City Campus – explaining the vision for a new centre of scientific excellence
Imperial College London is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science, engineering, medicine and business. It pioneered some of the great advances of the past century, from penicillin to fibre optics. Today, the College is planning for an equally ambitious future – developing its first major campus for 100 years across 23 acres in White City, West London.
Camargue was appointed to lead all communications for the campus which would provide new space for Imperial’s staff and students and enable collaboration with the private sector. Working with the College’s senior leadership and reporting to the Vice President, we helped to define the identity of this strategic project and engaged multiple audiences from the White City Estate to Whitehall.
Our brief included media relations to raise the Campus’ profile – not just as a place for outstanding research, but as somewhere where businesses can locate side by side with academics and spin-out companies to bring new ideas and products to market. We targeted national and key regional titles alongside specialist press with coverage ranging from ITV News, to Evening Standard, to Chemistry World.
A focus of our activity was supporting the College with several planning applications including its masterplan for the Campus’ southern half.
Building a strong relationship with local political stakeholders and the community in White City, one of Europe’s most socially deprived areas, was crucial to achieving the College’s vision and building long-term success.
Our in-house digital and design team, JFD, created an inventive quarterly newsletter to get local people involved, including competitions, hands-on science events and training programmes at its new community innovation centre.
Overall, we have helped to achieve planning consent for various planning applications and raised the profile of the campus among key stakeholders, from politicians to start-ups and the local community, with a consistent, strong visual identity.
