Elections focus: Senedd Cymru: a pivotal moment for Wales.

What’s happening? 

Most people know that the Senedd election is taking place on 7 May 2026, but far fewer understand how different this vote will be, or what it means for the makeup of Wales’ next government. 

This will be the first election held under major reforms that reshape how Members of the Senedd are chosen. Wales will now elect 96 MSs instead of 60, using a new closed list proportional voting system across 16 ‘super constituencies’. Terms will also shorten from five years to four, marking the biggest change to Welsh democracy since devolution. 

The key issues

A key issue facing voters in Wales is the cost of living. Whether it’s energy bills, the price of food, rent, or council tax, costs have been stubbornly high and continue to rise. With the war in Iran, there will be even more pressure on political parties to demonstrate how they will weather the storm of high costs for residents in Wales. 

Races to watch 

• Ceredigion Penfro – will the current First Minister lose her seat?
• Sir Gaerfyrddin – will a former Plaid Cymru leader lose his seat?
• Caerdydd Penarth – a Labour stronghold, will Greens win their first Senedd seat here? 

Zoom out 

If Wales’ first minister, Eluned Morgan, loses her seat, this will mark a significant turning point for Labour in Wales. Although the region of Ceredigion Penfro is not Labour’s heartland, no First Minister or Welsh Labour leader has ever lost their seat at an election in Wales. 

Polls are showing huge increases for smaller parties in Wales. With an increased proportional voting system, we are more likely to see these translate into seats. Many voters are fed up with the current establishment and are moving away from traditional parties. This is a major break from Wales’ historical pattern of stable Labour dominance.

Whether traditional parties hold their ground or smaller parties break through, the result will reshape Wales’s political landscape, and set the course for the next government’s priorities.
